Are you finding it increasingly difficult to get to your exercise routine? All of us have been there. No matter how great you feel after working out, getting started can be a real battle.

We could tell you that there’s a simple and effective way to get out of a fitness slump. It works for anything from eating better to completing the latest Jazzercise challenge. Experts say that the solution could be right in front of you, or a simple text message away: Your family and friends.

It is scientifically proven that exercising with a partner regularly can improve your results. It’s always fun to hang out with friends, but working out with an accountability buddy is more than double the fun. Find your own fitness wingwoman (or man) for these top five reasons. Watch the rewards pour in!

  1. Consistency is not just about you anymore
Working out with a family member or friend (the special ones) leads to greater consistency. The CDC says that “when someone else depends on you for your morning workout, you will not want to let them go.” The more you exercise, the faster you’ll see the benefits.
  2. Marathons are the only races that we’re talking about.
The benefits of working out with friends aren’t just temporary. They last a long time. One study found that those who began a fitness program with friends are more likely to finish it than those who go it alone. This group also had a 42% higher chance of maintaining their gains. It’s great to set goals, achieve them, and move on to the next.
  3. Motivation: Let’s Play!
It’s okay to have some friendly competition. The right partner can push you to your limits and create a supportive but competitive challenge. When you and your friend encourage each other, everyone works harder.

A partner who is accountable for you can motivate you as well by encouraging you. Praise, validation or even a simple fist-bump can boost your motivation and help you achieve the results that you want.

  1. Adventure: Get rid of the old and embrace the new!
The CDC says that working out with a partner can help you be more adventurous, and to explore new ways to keep fit. “It is easier to try something new with a buddy.” It’s possible to find an activity that you enjoy, and one that is more fun than a workout.
  2. Perspective Change is Positively Contagious
Tuning in to the thoughts of others can change your channel. When you share your workouts with family or friends, you can hear different perspectives. You can also influence each other’s viewpoints. The way you think influences your actions, whether it’s getting motivated to try out a new technique or being inspired by someone else. Surround yourself with positive people and you will start to feel the effects.

Look for someone who has similar goals, commitment and schedule. Keep an eye out for people who make you feel better just by being in their presence. Talk to your friends, coworkers and neighbors to start a conversation. When plans start to fall into place, you know that someone is right for you. You can also increase your options by reaching out to people via social media.

You might be surprised by the results, even if you are a self-proclaimed lone wolf. After a while, you can go back to exercising alone, but the results might surprise you.
